Bridge schedules

St. Petersburg was originally envisioned to be like Venice. Built on a series of islands, St. Petersburg often requires crossing one or more bridges in order to get from one point to the other. St. Petersburg is also a port city and requires it's bridges to be opened to allow for merchant ships to pass. From April until September each year, beginning around 1 a.m. it's wise to know the times the bridges open so you don't get stuck and have to wait for hours! The bridge schedule changes a little every year so it's important to make sure you have current times. Here are the times for the 2006 tourist season (May-October).

St. Petersburg's Metro System

St. Petersburg's metro is perhaps not as majestic as the one in Moscow, yet it looks more impressive than most other subways of the world. It is also the deepest subway in the world.

It is by far the most reliable city transport (particularly convenient for long-distance journeys). Normally trains arrive every 2-3 minutes, with slightly longer waiting periods early in the morning and late at night. On average the stations open at about 5:45 am and close between midnight and 0:30 am You can transfer from one line to the other until 0:15 am.
